According to Decrypt, a woman in San Jose, California, realized she had fallen victim to a cryptocurrency "pig butchering" scam after losing nearly $1 million, by asking ChatGPT.
The victim, Margaret Loke, met a man claiming to be "Ed" on Facebook in May this year, who presented himself as a wealthy businessman and gradually built an emotional connection. "Ed" then guided her to invest in cryptocurrency, leading Loke to withdraw over $490,000 from her retirement account and transfer an additional $300,000 through a home equity loan.
When the so-called cryptocurrency account suddenly "froze," and "Ed" demanded an extra $1 million to unfreeze the funds, Loke described the situation to ChatGPT. ChatGPT responded that the setup matched known scam patterns and advised her to report it to the police. Investigations revealed that the funds were transferred to a Malaysian bank account and withdrawn by the scammers.
